Stretcher

A structure, usually of wood, used to tauten and hold the canvas that supports the painting. When the joints of the bars are mobile the pressure applied by inserting wedges in the corners expands the stretcher slightly and tightens the canvas. The bars of the earliest stretchers were rectangular in section and fixed (bastigi).
