Portrait of a Woman of 57
The model is a woman seated, dressed in black, her head covered by a white headscarf with blue lines, with only her face and hands showing. The background shows the inside of a room with austere and realistic decoration which emphasises the volume of the person portrayed. According to an inscription at the top, it was painted 'at my age of 57'. The work forms a pair with the portrait of an adult man attributed to the same painter which is kept at the Huis Bergh Foundation in S-Heeresberg (Holland). Mielich, who was Albrecht Altdorfer's most outstanding pupil, painted portraits of Bavaria's ruling classes, especially in the city of Munich.
